FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How is cellular therapy used in joint regeneration and tissue/ligament repair?
A rich mixture of human cell and tissue products including mesenchymal stem cells, exosomes, growth factors, and cytokines are injected into the damaged joint or area of tissue damage. These cells and their byproducts initiate a biological cascade that repairs and regenerates damaged tissue. We administer several patient specific cellular and acellular therapies to alleviate pain in damaged or weakened joints.
How is it regulated in the U.S.?
The United States Food and Drug Administration carefully oversees and regulates all US based laboratories.
Who is a candidate for stem cell treatment?
Those seeking to repair damaged soft tissue, ligaments, and other joint supporting tissue as well as avoiding unnecessary, invasive surgeries.
Are patients awake during the cellular injection procedure?
Yes. Because it is an injection, the patient remains awake for the procedure which is conducted by a licensed medical professional.
Is the procedure painful?
The vast majority of patients feel only a bit of pressure during the procedure. In cases where the patient may feel discomfort, the medical provider takes care to numb the surface of the skin.
How long does the procedure take?
The whole medical procedure, including preparation of the area, injection, clean up and bandaging takes from 20-40 minutes depending on the size and location of the joint being treated.
How long is the recovery from the procedure?
If a patient is able to walk into the office for treatment, they can walk out and even drive themselves home. The patient may notice a feeling of tenderness in the area of treatment in the following 1-2 days. The patient may be asked to temporarily reduce or eliminate weight-bearing or jarring-impact activities to speed healing.
How long before my joint is healed?
This depends on the severity of damage to the area treated and patient adherence to Doctor recommended post-procedure protocols. In our observation, some patients experience substantial pain relief in two to six weeks, while for others it may take several months to experience the full benefit.
How many treatments are required?
The vast majority of patients need only one treatment to the affected area. Additional treatment to a joint is extremely rare.
What joints can be treated?
Any joint below the neck can be treated with cellular therapies.
Do you treat areas with prosthetic joints or surgical “hardware”?
As a general rule we do not administer cellular therapies in areas where surgical bone fusions or joint replacements have been completed or in areas where medical “hardware” has been installed. Tissue outside these areas can sometimes be treated.
Why do patients chose stem cell therapy over joint surgery?
Cellular therapies have been shown to be an affordable and effective means of repairing damaged tissue and holding off or eliminating painful surgeries. It is a simple procedure, unlike joint replacement surgery. Of greater significance is that joint replacement surgery is by no means problem-free. Mis-alignment of joints, failed prosthetics, fractionally shorter/longer legs, not to mention surgery-related complications and infections that can possibly result in death.
Is the treatment safe and effective, are there side effects?
The treatment is safe with no known side effects. Patients report increased range of motion, reduction and elimination of pain, and return to sports, walking, climbing stairs, etc.
